John
A Tribute
It is now 40 years since John Lennon was tragically murdered at only 40 years of age on 8th December 1980. Â
Like millions of people around the world I was filled with shock and disbelief but also a deep emotional sense of loss. This surprised me since I had never met him or any of The Beatles nor had I seen them play live, but it made me realise how deeply his songs such as ‘All You Need Is Love’, ‘Give Peace A Chance’, ‘Across The Universe’ and especially ‘Imagine’ had affected me. Â
After a couple of days a line came to me – ‘John it wasn’t all in vain, you left the words and they’ll be heard again’. So a song began to evolve which I wanted to be evocative of ‘Imagine’ musically but about John and his constant message of love and peace.
Within 8 days the song was complete and I then recorded it on what is now a very primitive 4-track cassette recorder.
So
What happened?
So what happened to the song for 40 years? Well the simple answer is it languished in a drawer with many other songs and instrumental pieces I have written, which I’m sure many songwriters and composers can relate to. The reason being I have been a professional musician since 1968 and my main priority was to earn a living.
My
Early Years
In my early teens I became an avid jazz fan triggered by the then so-called Trad Boom, when there were several excellent small jazz bands recreating traditional, aka dixieland jazz of the 1920’s. I began playing clarinet in the many jazz clubs and pubs around London which resulted in my being expelled from school and 5 years later sacked from my job in plastics research, all I wanted was to be a professional musician.
My love of jazz did not stop me from appreciating the many great pop and rock bands emerging in the 1960’s, so when I was offered a place in The New Vaudeville Band, who had already had a worldwide hit with ‘Winchester Cathedral’, I leapt at the chance of actually earning a living in music.
“The Lyrics
“John….it wasn’t all in vain, You left the words and they’ll be heard again.”
“John….your message won’t be lost, We’ll spread the word no matter what the cost.”
“Prematurely you found your final peace of mind, Peace is still our quest in life, and love for all mankind.”
“Wo wo wo”
“John….it ended where it should begin, Loved and missed and ageless now in secret thoughts within.”
